What's an Abandoned Cart Personalization

This personalization shows targeted messaging in your announcement bar to visitors who have added items to their cart but haven't completed checkout. The message shows the next time they return to the site. It runs continuously without day-to-day management and leverages your Klaviyo segmentation data.

Examples:

  • Announcement bar reminder: "Complete your checkout now and get a free gift!"

  • Simple urgency message: "Your cart is waiting - checkout now!"

  • Discount incentive: "Finish your order and save 10%"

Why This Works

Visitors who have added items to cart are high-intent shoppers. Giving them a prominent reminder of their abandoned cart improves conversion of returning visitors who have already shown purchase intent. This messaging catches them at the moment they return to your site, reducing friction and encouraging them to complete their purchase.

How to Build This Personalization in Intelligems

INSERT LOOM

Step 1: Confirm your Klaviyo Segments

Make sure you have Klaviyo segments set up for:

  • Abandoned cart visitors

Other common segments are Active on site, Added to cart, Started checkout

Step 2: Create the Non-Subscriber Personalization

  1. Go to Personalizations → Site Content → select Content Edits

  2. Name your Personalization something memorable like Abandoned Cart Reminder

Step 3: Add a Discount or GWP

Want to add an incentive to encourage the shopper? You can add an Offer to this Personalization, along with the Onsite Edits.

  1. In the Modifications tab, click + Add modification

  2. Select Offer

  3. Configure your offer (discount, free shipping, GWP)

  4. Click Save

Step 4: Update the Announcement Bar Message

  1. In the Modifications tab, click Add & Edit changes in Visual Editor

  2. Using the Intelligems widget, select Make onsite edits icon

  3. Click Select an element

  4. Click on your announcement / top bar, select Edit HTML / CSS

  5. Change the text shown in the HTML

  6. Add a link to your email signup page

    1. If you want to trigger a Klaviyo pop-up to show on click instead, follow these steps.

  1. Click Apply and then Save

  2. In Intelligems, click Refresh to see the changes

  3. In the Targeting tab, click Custom

  4. In the Targeting type dropdown, select Klaviyo Segment

  5. Add your Klaviyo Segment name for Cart abaonders or find it in the list using the Import from Klaviyo button

  6. Click Save

  7. Preview your personalization to make sure everything works

  1. Make sure that the link opens correctly inside the announcement bar text.

  2. Activate the Personalization

Step 5: Let it run

This Personalization will run continuous in the background. When a visitor returns to your site and we're able to identify them as a member of the Cart abandoner segment in Klaviyo, then they will get the reminder message to complete their order (and the offer), leading to a higher conversion rate.
